The General Assembly confirmed Walger's mandate for the coming term of office on December 1 in Brussels. For the first time, it will cover three years. The leading European medical technology association brings together more than 140 multinational companies and over 45 medical technology associations. Walger has represented the interests of the German diagnostics industry on the twenty-one-member board of MedTech Europe since 2018.
"It is both an honor and a responsibility to represent the industry on the European stage in challenging times," says Walger. The EU regulation on in-vitro diagnostics is particularly challenging for laboratory test manufacturers. The regulation governs product approval and market surveillance throughout Europe. The German IVD market comprises around a third of the EU-27 market, with a high export share. "The right balance between protecting health and promoting innovation has not yet been found," says Walger, referring to the evaluation of the IVD Regulation initiated by the EU Commission. The German industry associations BVMed and VDGH were the first to specify their proposals for the further development of the legal framework and published them in a joint white paper.
