Origin
The VDGH was founded in 1977 in Frankfurt as the "Associationof Diagnostics and Diagnostics DeviceManufacturers" and was later renamed the "Association of the Diagnostics Industry". Today, the VDGH represents more than 100 member companies that manufacture or distribute diagnostics and life science research (LSR) products. The member companies represent around 90 percent of domestic sales of diagnostics. Almost two thirds (62 percent) of the companies conduct research and development. 68 percent of the companies have production facilities in Germany. Biotechnology plays an important role here: around 35% of domestic turnover is generated using biotechnological processes.

Spectrum
The diagnostics industry develops and produces reagents and analysis systems, so-called in-vitro diagnostics. They are used to examine human body fluids and tissue as part of medical diagnostics, therapy and prevention. The products are used in medical laboratories and hospitals as well as in the practice and reference laboratory of general practitioners. Some of them are used by patients themselves, e.g. for measuring blood sugar and glucose levels.
The LSR industry develops and distributes instruments, reagents, test systems and consumables specifically for basic and applied research in all areas of the life sciences.

Goals
The diagnostics industry generally operates in highly regulated markets. Laboratory diagnostics is often viewed solely as a cost factor. The benefits of laboratory diagnostics - also in terms of savings for the overall system - and the economic potential of the industry are often overlooked. The VDGH therefore advocates replacing the primacy of cost containment policy and sectoral interventionism with an overall economic, technology and health policy strategy. This would allow the growth and employment potential of the healthcare sector to be used for the future viability of our economy.
