The German diagnostics industry can look back on a challenging year in 2023, with a 36% drop in sales to a total of €2.33 billion. As expected, the coronavirus diagnostics segment no longer had a significant impact. However, routine diagnostics also performed modestly with a decline of 5 per cent. Nevertheless, there is reason for cautious optimism: almost 60 per cent of companies expect turnover to increase in 2024.

VDGH press conference on 31 March 2023: Focus on Diagnostics - Review 2022 - Outlook 2023 (German)

The Association of the Diagnostics Industry (VDGH) presented its annual results for 2022 on 31 March 2023. According to the report, sales in the German in-vitro diagnostics (IVD) market totalled 3.54 billion euros, including coronavirus and routine diagnostics. Compared to the previous year, sales fell by 44 per cent, marking the end of the pandemic-related boom. The highest volume of tests was recorded in 2021 to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.

With their products, companies in the diagnostics industry have continued to make an enormous contribution to overcoming the pandemic. However, the picture for the year picture for 2021: on the one hand, companies have achieved record sales, particularly through particularly through rapid tests, while routine diagnostics have stagnated since the start of the pandemic.
