European IVD Market Estimates 2006 pdf  287.44 Kb

EDMA presents the 2006 Market Estimates EDMA, the European Diagnostic Manufacturers Association, is pleased to publish the market estimates of the In Vitro Diagnostic industry in Europe, for the year 2006. European sales reached €9,217 Mio, combining data from EU countries and the European Free Trade Association. For the first time, macroeconomic and healthcare expenditure figures are also available for the EU 27 Member States, providing a clear picture of market and healthcare trends across Europe.

In 2006, the average IVD sales in most European countries represented less than 2% of the Total Healthcare Expenditure (THE).

These figures include macroeconomic and healthcare expenditure figures for the traditional EU 15 Members, the six countries that joined the Community on 1 May 2004 (Cyprus, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta and Slovenia), Bulgaria and Romania following their accession to the EU on 1 January 2007, as well as data for the European Free Trade Association (EFTA).

When focusing on the European Union, the EU 15 countries spent 0.9% out of THE in IVDs (i.e. €21.3 per capita), while the new members states dedicated an average of 1.5% to IVDs out of THE (i.e. €6.2 per capita).

In the US, the amount spent on IVDs out of the Total Healthcare Expenditure was 1.1%, which represented about €36.7 per capita and per annum. In the same period, Japan allocated 0.7% of its THE to In Vitro Diagnostics, amounting to €22.9 per capita.

In 2006, healthcare expenses per capita amounted only €169 in Romania and €204 in Bulgaria, being the two new Member States the lowest investors in the EU. The biggest allocated budgets kept increasing last year, reaching €4,525 in Switzerland, €4,736 in Norway, and €5,169 in Luxembourg. Whereas the money spent to protect the health of each US citizen represented €5,102 and €2,097 in the case of the Japanese population.

In the EU 15 countries, the Total Healthcare Expenditure represented approximately 9.23% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), not too far from the average 8% spent in all EU 27. The highest European percentage corresponded to Switzerland (11%), which was still below the 15% allocated in the United States.

NOTE: The results presented by EDMA are based on individual estimates made in 27 European countries:

  edma2006-b3
  •  11 countries participating in the European Diagnostic Market Statistics (EDMS) programme: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, the Netherlands and UK.

  • The National Associations members of EDMA and the EDMA Market Research Committee have estimated the IVD market in 16 other countries not participating in the EDMS programme: and Bulgaria, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Sweden.

The EDMA figures per country are compiled from the “European Diagnostic Market Statistics” (EDMS) programme (where companies report invoiced sales of reagents, instruments and consumables to an independent auditor CIP, according to the EDMA Classification), in association with the EDMA Market Research Committee and the National Associations members of EDMA.

More than 85% of the market is covered in major countries, ensuring the reliability and objectiveness of the information provided by EDMA and its members. EDMA encourages all companies and countries to participate to the EDMS programme, which is the largest In Vitro Diagnostic audit in Europe and the most accurate source of information to understand and foresee the market trends.
